Ophthalmology Specialty Internship, Animal Eye Guys, South Florida

Animal Eye Guys of South Florida is pleased to be offering an Ophthalmology specialty internship for 2026-2027. 

The purpose of this internship is to provide a broad exposure to clinical ophthalmology cases to prepare a candidate for an Ophthalmology residency. The program is supported by four ACVO board certified ophthalmologists and practice limited to disease of the animal eye veterinarians as well as a second year House Officer. Our collaborative Ophthalmology service sees mostly small animal patients with opportunities for exposure to exotic, wildlife and equine practice. For this internship, time would primarily be spent between our Coral Springs and Miami Gardens locations with opportunities to visit our other locations.

Our intern's responsibilities will ultimately include:

Receiving Ophthalmology appointments, obtaining a pertinent history and physical exam along with our outstanding support team.

Determination of appropriate diagnostic testing and performing slit lamp biomicroscopic and fundic exam.

Acquisition and interpretation of diagnostics including schirmer tear test, intraocular pressure and fluorescein dye testing with training and experience in electroretinography, ocular ultrasound and others. 

Assuming primary case responsibility under the supervision of the Ophthalmologist for an active Rescue cooperation program whereby Rescue organizations with an active 501(c)(3) can receive a significant discount for participating with our Intern and Residency training programs.  

Communicating with pet owners and referring veterinarians.

Participation in didactic rounds once to twice weekly, which includes Gelatt, topic, image recognition and journal club rounds in addition to mock board exams throughout the year. Our intern will share leading discussion during journal club and Gelatt rounds. A research project culminating in a professional presentation as well as a publication are highly encouraged during the intern year.

The annual salary is $55,000 with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026 and an anticipated completion date of June 30, 2027. One week is encouraged to be spent at the COPLOW laboratory if interested. 

In your free time, South Florida has many opportunities to explore for various interests. Enjoy some of the best off-shore snorkeling and diving around. You can study on the beach or travel around to the many parks and reserves with only a short drive to the Keys to the south and Disneyworld to the north. This bustling and culturally diverse region is teeming with activities, sports events, concerts, festivals that are available year round thanks to the amazing weather.
