Message from ACVO BOR & DEI Ad Hoc Committee.

Congratulations to ACVO Member, Dr. Elizabeth A. Giuliano, DVM, MS, DACVO who was the first ever veterinary ophthalmologist to be invited to speak at the annual American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons Annual Scientific Symposium.

The ACVO would like to thank the following outstanding ACVO members for agreeing to be placed on the 2023 Slate of Officers as candidates for Regent on the ACVO Board, Drs. Shannon Boveland, Tammy Miller-Michau, and Rob Swinger. And to Dr. Rachel Allbaugh, for agreeing to run as VSOC Alternate Representative. We are so grateful you agreed to run for office to represent the ACVO! All candidates have demonstrated outstanding service to the ACVO over the years, and we are very grateful for their dedication.

Listed below are the 23 candidates who have passed all three sections of the 2023 ABVO Examination and were granted ACVO diplomate status in August 2023.

ACVO Member, Dr. Gus Aguirre, was honored as a co-recipient of the 2023 Helen Keller Prize for Vision Research from the Helen Keller Foundation & BrightFocus Foundation.

Three elderly king penguins at Singapore's Jurong Bird Park were recently fitted with custom-made eye lenses during cataract surgery performed by ACVO Member, Dr. Gladys Boo.

ACVO Member, Dr. Elizabeth Giuliano of the University of Missouri, was named the recipient of the 2023 Jordan Hoyt Memorial Tribute to Women Award.

The ACVO Vision for Animals Foundation (VAF) is pleased to announce the 2022-2023 Resident Grant Award recipients.  Award winners will receive a combined total of $15,000.

ACVO Member, Dr. Rachel Allbaugh, received Iowa State University's Inspiration Award in May 2022!

ACVO Member, Dr. Freya Mowat with University of Wisconsin-Madison, lead a team of researchers on a study of what dogs watch on television to help lay the groundwork for developing better ways of assessing vision in dogs.

The Basic Science Committee is excited to announce that registration IS OPEN for the 2023 course! This year, the Basic Science Course will again be offered as a series of online lectures and discussions following the same general format used in 2020 and 2021. It will run for approximately 8 weeks and comprise three consecutive parts.

We were recently given the news of the passing of two ACVO Diplomates in 2021. Drs. Rowan Blogg (boarded in 1978) and Leslie Williams (boarded in 1982) passed away last year.

The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO®) is proud to announce that registration for the limited 2022 ACVO/Epicur National Service Animal Eye Exam Event is now open!

Nominations are sought for one position on the American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ABVO) that will become open upon the completion of ABVO Chairperson, Dr. Susan Nelms' term, fall 2022.

Complete nominations must be received electronically by the ABVO office no later than midnight (Mountain Time), May 15, 2022 (please submit bio/photograph materials by May 25th to allow adequate time to post and format).

We are pleased to announce that after working with our diplomate members and our sponsor, the 2022 ACVO/Epicur National Service Animal Eye Exam Event will be taking place in 2022 on a limited basis!

The ACVO Board of Regents hereby issues its call for nominations for the positions of Regent and Secretary/Treasurer. This is a minimal three year position, to start fall 2022. ACVO members who have served on past ACVO or ABVO committees, and may be interested in serving, are encouraged to reach out to the Nominating Committee Chairperson, Dr. Wendy Townsend (townsenw@purdue.edu). Nominations will close April 15th.

The ACVO has provided access on the Veterinary Ophthalmology Journal website to the recordings from the 2021 ACVO Conference Resident’s Workshop “Scientific Manuscript Writing and Review.”
