The Animal Eye Institute is very excited to offer an Ophthalmology Internship which would begin July 15, 2024 and conclude on July 15, 2025. Clinical responsibilities will be conducted under direct supervision of DJ Haeussler, Jr., DVM, MS, DACVO as well as Ronald Spatola, DVM, MS, DACVO, Jamie Lembo, DVM, DACVO, and external support from Dr. Christina Korb, DVM, DACVO. This internship does not include our Charleston, South Carolina office.
The intern will work one-on-one with Dr. Haeussler, Dr. Spatola, Dr. Jamie Lembo, Dr. Taylor Wickware, Dr. Erica Bono, and Dr. Emily Spica. The intern’s instruction will include: primary patient care, management of inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, assisting with surgical procedures, and diagnosing and treating companion animals, equine patients, and wildlife with various ophthalmic disease.
In addition to routine clinical responsibilities, the intern will also provide in house seminars, be expected to participate in weekly rounds (journal club, image recognition, and histology), and will be expected to participate in weekend and emergency duties.
Interns will be expected to provide consultations and contribute to educating referring veterinarians and their practices. Candidates must be highly ambitious, socially sound, and have completed a one-year rotating internship or its equivalent in practice experience.
Interns will need to have a DVM or equivalent, passed the NAVLE/ECVFG and will be licensed in the state of Ohio and Kentucky. Interns must have successfully completed a rotating internship or five years in general practice.
The Animal Eye Institute operates from four locations: Cincinnati (Ohio), Dayton (Ohio), Florence (Kentucky), and Charleston (South Carolina). We have a busy small animal and equine caseload and we routinely examine exotic patients.
Our Ophthalmology Intern will be expected to fulfill weekly reading requirements. Interns will be strongly encouraged to attend the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists Annual Meeting as well as the occasional regional veterinary ophthalmology conferences.
The experience will prepare the intern for a successful residency in veterinary ophthalmology. If suitable, the intern may continue with a residency at The Animal Eye Institute.
*Vacation, Compensation, and Requirements*
Interns will be allowed 10 days for vacation/CE/sick time/interviews. The annual salary is $41,000. Ohio and Kentucky state licensure as well as professional liability insurance will be provided, as well as a CE allowance to attend the ACVO annual conference. Medical insurance is available as well.
