Description: WCVM is currently accepting applications for a 1-year veterinary ophthalmology internship. This is a graduate certificate program. Intern applicants must have a DVM (or equivalent). Experience in ophthalmology is desirable. This individual is expected to be highly motivated and have an interest in pursuing a veterinary ophthalmology residency position. The goals of this internship are to develop advanced skills in clinical ophthalmology through the involvement in the day-to-day running of an ophthalmology specialty service. They will gain experience in clinical examination and basic ophthalmic surgery in small and large animals. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in faculty research projects as well as perform clinical research and publication. This internship is designed to provide the candidate with an advantage in the veterinary ophthalmology residency application process, allowing them to excel in their education. Specialty interns participate in up to 1 weekend of general emergency duty per month. A salary of $28,000.00 CAD is offered, and the intern receives professional liability insurance and a student health and dental plan. Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association licensing fees and tuition and student fees are covered by a WCVM bursary. The intern receives 3 weeks of vacation organized with the ophthalmology faculty. Unused vacation time will not be paid out and can’t be taken during the last week of the program.
The Veterinary Medical Centre at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine has a growing ophthalmology caseload in small, large and exotic/wildlife patients. We offer a variety of diagnostic capabilities utilizing electroretinography, ultrasonography, optical coherence tomography, and fluorescein angiography as well as advanced surgical technologies including endoscopic laser and posterior segment surgical capabilities. The college offers specialty services in medical imaging, oncology, radiation oncology, small and large animal surgery, small and large animal internal medicine, dentistry, critical care, nutrition, sports medicine and rehabilitation and exotics.
Applicants from countries where English is not the first language must provide proof of English proficiency. Applicants must provide proof of acceptable English language scores at the time of application to be considered.
