The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, announces a 3-year residency in Comparative Ophthalmology to begin July 15, 2024. The deadline for application materials to arrive at the University of Tennessee is noon EST, Monday, November 13, 2023. Following review of all applications, a select number of applicants will be invited to an interview, with the applicant’s option for in person or zoom interview.  An offer will be extended January 29, 2024, as per the ORCA rules. 

Prerequisites:

  1. DVM degree or equivalent.

  2. A 12-month internship (small animal rotating is preferred).

  3. Due to restrictions from the Department of Homeland Security, this position is only open to those that do not require a visa to work in the United States (U.S citizens and permanent residents) or those eligible for a Mexican or Canadian NAFTA professional worker (TN) visa.

Program Description:

The primary objective of this three-year program is to train the resident as a specialist in veterinary ophthalmology and to prepare the candidate for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.  The resident would be joining four ACVO diplomate faculty members, one resident, and two ophthalmology technicians. Residents are expected to engage in research and teaching activities, as well as attend and present research at continuing education programs. Retention in the program is contingent upon continued satisfactory performance.

The ophthalmology service at the University of Tennessee provides veterinary ophthalmic services for the Departments of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (dogs, cats, birds, small exotics, laboratory animals, wildlife), Large Animal Clinical Sciences (horses, farm animals), and the Knoxville Zoo and Ripley’s Aquarium.  Annual ophthalmology caseload is approximately 3,200 cases. Facilities for extensive diagnostic work-up and the medical/surgical treatment of all species are provided within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Current surgical and case numbers exceed the ABVO requirements.

Salary: $38,000 with an annual raise

  1. Curriculum vitae including cumulative veterinary school GPA, class rank, and contact information. 

  2. A personal statement describing background, qualifications, reasons for applying for the residency, and career goals.

  3. Three letters of recommendation. These letters should be e-mailed directly to the University of Tennessee by the letter writer or administrative assistant.  Letters should address knowledge of veterinary medicine, general clinical skills, ability to apply knowledge in a clinical situation, communication skills, and ability to work with others.

  4. Transcripts (including grade point average and veterinary school class rank) from all graduate institutions attended. Official transcripts are not necessary for the application process but will be required for the selected applicant for official hiring.
