Bliss Animal Eye Care is pleased to offer a partial-year Specialty Ophthalmology Internship (SOITP) designed for motivated veterinarians seeking advanced experience in veterinary ophthalmology. This program provides structured, hands-on training in the diagnosis and management of ocular disease across a wide variety of species, with the goal of preparing the successful candidate for an ophthalmology residency.
Program Overview

Established in 2023, the Bliss Animal Eye Care SOITP has successfully trained three interns, all of whom have obtained ophthalmology residencies. Our practice offers a unique caseload encompassing small animals, equine patients, exotics, and wildlife, with opportunities to participate in ongoing research in aquatic ophthalmology (including rockfish and pinnipeds) and fieldwork at Oregon zoos and wildlife centers.

Interns will work closely under the supervision of Dr. Cassandra Bliss, DVM, DACVO, as well as at least 1-2 other locum ophthalmologists in a supportive private practice setting with a dedicated and experienced ophthalmic support team.

Program Structure

• Schedule: 5 clinical days (Mon–Fri)

• Emergency Duty: Ophthalmology emergencies only and frequency varies with caseload

• Work Hours: Limited to an average of 60 hours per week, with protected time off and vacation (current interns average 40 hours or less in clinic).

• Location: Medford, Oregon, with travel to regional partner facilities and zoos

Clinical Experience

Interns will gain progressive responsibility for patient care under direct supervision, including:

 • Comprehensive ophthalmic examinations and case management for small animal, equine, and exotic patients

• Proficiency in slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, tonometry, and tear film assessment

• Participation in diagnostic testing, ocular imaging, and external/fundic photography

• Exposure to advanced diagnostic modalities such as ocular ultrasound and electroretinography

• Surgical experience through collaboration with local rescues, shelters, and referral partners

• Regular participation in journal club, histopathology rounds, and case discussions

Educational Opportunities

• Minimum of 2 hours/month of structured didactic learning, including journal clubs and ocular pathology rounds

• Encouragement and mentorship for a self-directed research or case project suitable for presentation or publication.

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary: $4100/mo with a minimum 6 mo commitment - Commensurate with cost of living (based on MIT Living Wage Calculator for Jackson County, Oregon)

• Benefits: Dependent on time commitment -  paid vacation and unpaid sick leave, liability coverage, health insurance options, and professional dues
