The Animal Medical Center announces an outstanding opportunity for a full-time position as Chief Medical Officer. The CMO will be responsible for providing medical oversight, direction and leadership for all aspects of veterinary healthcare delivery for the hospital and is also a full member of the executive leadership team.

The Animal Medical Center in New York City is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit veterinary center that has been a national leader in animal care since 1910. As an academic veterinary hospital, AMC promotes the health and well-being of companion animals through advanced treatment, research and education.

The CMO is responsible for providing advice and counsel in defining and accomplishing the facility’s mission and goals and ensuring high-quality veterinarian care. All services shall be provided in accordance with established standards, principles and ethics of the profession, applicable professional specialty organizations, and the high-quality standard for which AMC is recognized. The CMO will also provide leadership and direction to advance the mission and vision of The Caspary Research Institute, The Institute for Postgraduate Education and The Usdan Institute for Animal Health Education initiatives.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Develops annual goals and oversight of each service in conjunction with service heads and senior management.

  • Ensures a high level of customer satisfaction (members, vendors, providers, regulators, accreditation agencies, RDVMs, peers and employees).

  • Anticipates and identifies key source information to analyze problems clearly and determines creative solutions. Identifies trends, problems and opportunities, conducts root cause analysis. Implements action plans in an effective and efficient manner aimed at promoting goals/resolving barrier issues; strives to improve efficiencies of key operational areas.

  • Accountable to the CEO & Board of Trustees for the quality, safety, and efficiency of clinical services within the hospital and for the effectiveness of the patient care review and other assessment functions delegated to the Medical Staff.

Qualifications & Position Success Criteria

  • Considerable independent decision making with veterinarians, members, subordinates, other departmental leaders and external vendors, regulatory and accreditation agency

  • Communication skills both oral and written, tact and diplomacy sufficient to successfully carry out the above duties and responsibilities

  • Knowledge of clinical practice of medicine, health care delivery systems, utilization methods and treatment protocols

  • Possess a patient-centered orientation to promote and advance a culture of quality and safety.

  • Proven leadership, organizational skills. Able to defuse volatile or inflammatory situations, resolve conflict, lead change, speak and write with clarity, hold others accountable, aspire to excellence, work independently, communicate respectfully, honestly and directly and emulate servant leadership.

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse, multi-disciplinary clinicians

Education & Experience

  • Board certification

  • Active unrestricted New York license to practice veterinary medicine or the ability to obtain one is required.

  • 6 years of clinical practice.

  • Experience in the clinical practice of medicine, utilization methods and treatment protocols

  • Must have prior experience in medical staff governance and leadership such as a medical staff committee chair, Chief of Staff or equivalent

  • The applicant should have demonstrated successful administrative and leadership competencies and outcomes from their relationship building skills, emotional intelligence and capabilities

  • Have the ability to listen, gather information, influence and assume responsibility for challenging and difficult decisions, including willingness to recommend and cooperate in corrective action with respect to practitioners and specified health professionals.

  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and react calmly under stressful conditions.

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
